When you need to correct pitches in your vocals or add some effects to your words to sound robotic, autotune is your solution. For a couple of years now, it has been used to improve the progress of music mixing and composing. It used to be only available to large music corporations. But now, autotune is available everywhere for everyone, thanks to various music engineers programming audio plug-ins for audio software.

But how can you determine what is the best autotune plug-in for you? To determine which plug-in is the best, we need to use these factors. The plug-in should have a versatile interface for beginners and professionals, be available for most computer types, affordability, and the plug-in features to create the best audio editing quality.

How is Autotune Used for Music

Autotune is an audio filter for pitch correction and voice modulator in the music industry. At first, it was seen as a disgrace and made listeners believe most music artists using the filter fake their singing ability while they actually used it for creative reasons. However, it leads the music industry to a new opportunity to boost their productivity. Audio engineers would use autotune to lower recording retakes from the singer.

A couple of years later, music engineers found some creative liberties in how it can be used for electronic music and entertainment. The comedy music group, Schmoyoho tested this idea by autotuning news reports. Then popularized autotune by remixing the voice of the double rainbow guy with their composed music, creating the song Double Rainbow with 40 million views on Youtube.

1. Antares Audio Tech Auto-Tune Pro

AT-Pro

The sound company that invented autotune, Antares Audio Technologies, or Antarestech for short, continued to work with the filter for over 20 years. With their most advanced plug-in, Auto-Tune Pro, Antarestech has added new features for a beginner-friendly experience. And it works for most digital audio workstations.

It comes with an Auto-Key plug-in to automatically detect incorrect pitches or spoken words, then match it to the key of the song composition. And an Auto Mode to correct notes and add in voice modulation effects in real-time. For professional users, there is a Graph Mode to edit vocal recordings manually.

From its previous version, Auto-Tune 5, it kept the Humanize filter to help an altered audio clip to sound more human rather than keep it robotic. Alongside with Flex-Tune, it assists the Humanize filter by isolating the vocal expression while targeting the right notes and pitch. And the Transpose and Throat Modeling for smooth note transitions and vocal transformations in real-time correction.

What makes Auto-Mode interesting in Auto-Tune Pro is the user interface it can be applied to. It can be set up in Basic View for beginners to have an accessible way to reach the Auto-Mode features during the audio editing. And Advanced View for professionals will have added features with scale editing and vibrato control for MIDI files.

Auto-Tune Pro does have a downside for Linux users because the plug-in is only available for macOS and Windows. This plug-in can be very expensive to most people who want the entire program experience with Auto-Tune Access. However, that experience over time with their upgrades and crossgrade bundles that are more affordable.

2. Auburn Sounds Graillon Version 2

auburn

Auburn Sounds have provided musicians and voice artists with their live vocal changer, Graillon. Their program provided Windows, macOS, and Linux users a vocal modulation tool for any kind of digital audio workstation program. Now upgraded to Graillon 2.6, it carries more music filters than ever before.

In the 2.6 version of Graillon, Auburn Sounds have fixed many crashes and bugs with OBS Studio, VST3 midi input and latency reporting, and installer directory. The interface is now resizable to prevent itself from getting in the way of the user interface on their DAW.

The filters provided are for musicians composing electronic music and for voice actors voicing robotic voices. It has a Detect filter to ensure users the effects and audio panning are balanced as if the sound was in mono. The Pitch Shifting filter is not only designed to modulate voices but different algorithmic sounds. And it can do it while preserving the original sound of the audio input you provided.

In addition to music artists and sound effect specialists, Graillon provides a Bit Crusher filter. The bit crusher gives a booming effect to audio clips. If you aren’t satisfied with the heavy bass sound, the Low Cut filter can reduce the bass amount. And for musician streamers, it can follow a live set of notes and live voices with OBS Studio.

What Graillon 2.6 offers a free version of the program to try out voice modulating their features. However, it won’t give access to all of the features that the full version provides. Luckily, the full version is available at an affordable price for most users.

3. Melda Production MAutoPitch

MAutoPitch00

Melda Productions have provided lots of plug-ins that are specialized in music instruments and audio mixing. Not only do they provide professional audio engineers, but plug-ins for beginners. Prices range from free to affordable bundles and individual plug-ins.

Within those free plug-ins is their autotune tool, MAutoPitch. It’s an easy-to-use autotune filter that can be used for audio editing software. The user interface is beginner-friendly, with their virtual knobs labeled with the name of a filter. It even comes with a scale bar displaying the 4 types of scales from chromatic to pentatonic and letter scales.

MAutoPitch also comes with its own detector to see if the audio is balanced as if it was in mono. The Keep Formants and Formants knobs allow you to adjust how much of the original sound you want in your audio and how much you want it to reduce. And a Detuning knob to experiment with different pitches from high to low.

While MAutoPitch is a great free-to-use autotune tool, its interface is the reason some musicians stray away from it. Filters must be adjusted manually more than automatically. On the bright side, MAutoPitch does come free with the MFreeFX Bundle if you are looking for other free audio plug-ins.

4. Logic Pro Flex Pitch

logic

Logic Pro has become Apple’s audio editing software for macOS. The software comes with an asset of plug-ins with unique features that are needed for editing audio. One of the plug-ins that are provided is their autotune tool, Flex Pitch.

Flex Pitch can automatically detect any incorrect pitches in an audio clip or an algorithmic beat. Then it allows you to either manually adjust them or allow Flex Pitch to scan these inconsistencies and arrange them on the pitch curve. Flex Pitch not only provides pitch correction. It can also extract a MIDI file from any audio file you give it.

While Flex Pitch can do a lot on its own, it relies on other Logic Pro features to bring the best quality. With Flex Time, it isolates different tempos and beats for easy manipulation. And Smart Tempo can align beats and bars while adjusting to tempo changes.

Unfortunately, while Logic Pro is affordable with Flex Pitch in the Apple Store, this autotune plug-in is only available for macOS.

5. BeatLab’s Autotune for Ableton Live

beatlab

For over a decade, Ableton has provided an educational easy-to-use digital audio workstation along with their kinds of plug-ins for audio engineer students from BeatLab. They offer a free plug-in called BeatLab Autotuna, or Autotune for Ableton.

The user interface is both suited for beginners and professional music composers. It’s similar to MAutoPitch’s interface, only vertical, and the knobs are replaced with a value counter. The scale has more pattern options, from chromatic to phrygian. After updating to 1.3, the scale can now follow a live set of notes and voices for musician streamers similar to Graillon 2.6 with OBS Studio.

Unlike the previously mentioned plug-ins, Autotune for Ableton has a pattern sampler. It can save an audio clip of a musical pattern you have created with a tap of a button. It’s perfect for solo and group artists who need a looping effect and streamers who need a virtual soundboard.

The only flaw it has is that it is restricted for Ableton users. Luckily, if you want to try out the plug-in, Ableton offers a 90-day free trial for Windows and macOS users.

Conclusion

Out of the 5 autotune plug-ins, the winner is Auto-Tune Pro. While the price point for the Auto-Tune Access version will turn away buyers, the upgrades and crossgrades bundles are affordable for you to enjoy the most of the Auto-Tune Pro experience. Its interface and features can be customized based on the user preference to be in Basic view and Advanced view, whether for a beginner or a professional. The best part is it works with most DAW programs with VST3, AU, and AAX plug-in support. And while the plug-in is unusable for Linux users, Windows and macOS users will be pleased to have this filter.
